Re: “Delta mayor not happy with high cost of TransLink.”
Because Delta has chosen to remain as a low-density area (and in particular Tsawwassen), it is to be expected that the cost per capita is so high.
Two things are left out of Mayor Jackson’s comments:
1. TransLink is responsible for roads as well, and so all people using the roads must pay.
2. TransLink loses a lot of revenue due to people crossing to the United States (especially Point Roberts) to fill up their cars with gas that is much, much cheaper.
Can you blame us?
If only the taxes could be lowered for Canadians, we might all fill up at local service stations and in this way keep the business in our community.
I do not want to see density increased here, as it has been done in Surrey and many parts of Vancouver.
I therefore must accept that more payment is required and that we cannot have as efficient a bus service as some might like.
However, I still feel there are other ways for TransLink to collect revenue and there are ways in which the company can cut back on its expenses instead of targeting homeowners (through property tax and tax on hydro bills) and targeting drivers.
