After blowing a three-run lead in the last half-inning, the Whalley Chiefs scored the lone run in extra innings to defeat the North Delta Blue Jays 8-7 Tuesday night at Mackie Park.
The Chiefs broke a 4-4 tie with three runs in the top of the seventh inning, taking advantage of three North Delta errors to get to within three outs of a victory.
North Delta pulled even in the last half of the seventh on a two-run double from Shane Wlodarczak and a two-out single from Tyler Smythe.
But Jordan McComb’s sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning scored Malcolm Upton for the winning run.
North Delta outhit Whalley 9-5, with Brad Antchak and Clint Taylor of the Blue Jays collecting two hits each. Taylor also had a pair of runs batted in (RBIs).
Upton was the top Chiefs batter with a single, double and two runs scored.
North Delta slipped to 11-17 (won-lost), two and one-half games away from the final playoff berth. The Chiefs are six and one-half games out at 6-20.
The Chiefs host the 16-7 Victoria Mariners for two games Saturday at Whalley Stadium. The first game is at 1 p.m. North Delta plays tonight on the road against the 16-14 Abbotsford Cardinals.
