SURREY — More than 100 young local athletes hit the pool each year with the goal of being “Aquasonics for life.”
This is the inspiring motto of B.C. Aquasonics, a Surrey-based synchronized swim club.
Formed nearly 50 years ago, it’s the largest such organization in the province, and one of the largest in Canada.
The sport of “synchro” is an artful blend of meticulously co-ordinated acrobatics, swimming and dance.

In Quebec City last month, the B.C. Aquasonics’ junior team placed sixth at Synchro Canada’s National Qualifier Championships, held at Laval University.
It was the best finish at the event for a B.C. junior team since the Qualifier was introduced in 2013 as Canada’s largest synchro competition.
“We are tremendously proud of our junior team,” said Susan Kemper, Aquasonics head coach.
“We had a few curve balls thrown our way this year but these young women work extremely well as a team and really came together for this competition. They fought hard and earned that fifth-place spot for their routine and sixth place overall in the competition.”
The team includes Surrey residents Courtney Armstrong, Jessica Friesen, Erin Nichols, Emily Yang and Nancy Zhang, Grace Macdonald of Delta, Cameron Blades of Langley and Mikayla Papillo of Coquitlam.
Next up is a trip to Calgary for the Canadian Open Synchronized Swimming Championships, held from April 27 to May 1.
Practices are held at Surrey Sport & Leisure Complex and also at City Centre Aquatic Complex in Coquitlam.
