Dropping the gloves with Jack Flaman

Vancouver Giants winger once scored 15 goals in a novice game

Jack Flaman is a 19-year-old forward in his second season with the Vancouver Giants. In 17 WHL games this season, he has seven goals and nine points.

Flaman is from Vibank, Sask., a small village with a population of 374.

He spent a few minutes with Times sports reporter Gary Ahuja to answer some questions about who he is on and off the ice.

How old were you when you first skated: When I first put on the skates, I think I was three years old. I started pushing with just my left leg and I slowly developed my right leg and then I was full skating by five. It was me, my dad and (older) brother. We were always kind of out there together. My mom always talks about how she remembers we would go out to the rink and I would practice with my brother’s team and she would have to pack me a snack because I would come off halfway through practice because I was too tired.”

Hockey hero: In the NHL it would have to be Jonathan Toews but I grew up watching my dad (Matthew) a lot, even though he was just a local guy. He did a lot for me, just always reminding me of my dream.

Last book you read: All the Way: My Life on Ice by NHL player Jordin Tootoo.

Pre-game ritual: I don’t have any exact rituals. I like to stay loose and limber. I don’t worry about following the same thing every time. If it’s anything, I would say I don’t like to have my blade hit the floor before it hits the ice.”

Favourite meal: If I am at home, I like a good steak from the farm. For my pre-game meal it would have to be stir fry with chicken and Quinoa.

Other sport: If I didn’t play hockey, it would be baseball. I am a huge baseball fan.

If you couldn’t play hockey, what would you do: I think I would help my dad and try and take over the family farm (dairy farm with 170 cows).

Favourite subject in school: Math

Nickname: In the dressing room they just call me The Farmer.

Biggest hockey name from your hometown: Brett Ferguson. Kyle Stroh. They are both playing (professionally) in France and I think we are the only three from our town still playing.

Most goals in a game: When I was in novice one time, I had 15 goals in one game. My mom always reminds me of that game because she says never get your dreams down because you can always do it.

Favourite thing about hockey: I get to come to the rink every day and be around my buddies. I get to make money hanging out with friends and doing what I love.

Ultimate golf foursome: Jordan Spieth, my dad would kill me if I didn’t take Phil Mickelson, and I would have to take either my dad or grandpa with me just so I wouldn’t be too awkward or shy.

How do you relax: Kick back, watch some TV or a movie.

Teammate most likely to cheat at cards or golf: It would have to be Tyler Brown. I think I remember him on our golf outing as team kicking the ball a couple of times.

Best dressed Giant: It’s not me. I think it would have to be my roommate Darian Skeoch. He has always got nice clothes on no matter where we are going.”
