Matt Barberis is in his second season with the Vancouver Giants. In 26 WHL games this season, Barberis, who turns 19 later this month, has seven goals — tops among Vancouver defencemen — and 14 points in 26 games.
Barberis is a local product from Surrey, playing first for the Semiahmoo Minor Hockey Association before switching to the Burnaby Winter Club.
He was a first round pick of the Giants in the 2013 WHL bantam draft.
He spent a few minutes with Times sports reporter Gary Ahuja to answer some questions about who he is on and off the ice.
How old were you when you first skated: I was four years old and my dad (Evan) taught me how to skate.
Hockey hero: My dad.
Pre-game ritual: Eat the same meal, pasta, chicken and salad. Taping my stick.
Favourite meal: Pizza.
If you couldn’t play hockey, what sport would you play: Soccer. It is in my nationality (Greek), in my heritage.
If you couldn’t play hockey, what would you do: I would be a lawyer. I like to argue and I always have to win.
Favourite subject in school: PE.
Nickname: Barbs.
Biggest hockey name from your hometown: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, he played at the Burnaby Winter Club.
Most goals in a game: Four, in beer league.
Last movie you saw: Rogue One.
Last concert you attended: Kanye West.
Favourite thing about hockey: The team, being around the boys.
Ultimate golf foursome: Tiger Woods, Rickey Fowler and (teammate) Taden Rattie.
How do you relax: Hang out with the boys, go to a movie.
