It was a rough few days for the North Delta Blue Jays last weekend, as the BC Premier Baseball League squad lost both ends of doubleheader Saturday to the Langley Blaze before rebounding Sunday to win once against the Victoria Eagles.
The Whalley Chiefs, meanwhile, played just twice, splitting a doubleheader on the road against the Abbotsford Cardinals.
The Jays (10-15 win-loss record) ran up against the red-hot Blaze (24-5), failing to score a run against the team that has now won nine of the last 10 games.
In the first game Saturday, North Delta managed just four hits off Langley starting pitcher Marc Andre Habeck en route to a 3-0 loss, and in the second tilt lost 10-0, managing just four hits off four Langley pitchers. Blaze ace Jon Bauer got the wink, striking out five in just four innings.
First-baseman Shane Wlodarczak had two of Delta's four hits, including a double.
North Delta was shutout in the Sunday's opener, too, 10-0 to Victoria. Wlodarczak was the losing pitcher in that contest, giving up seven runs in four innings of work.
Victoria pitcher Brendan Miller, meanwhile, held the Jays to just three hits.
The Whalley Chiefs opened their weekend schedule with a 9-6 win over the Cardinals Sunday afternoon, but lost the nightcap, 6-4.
The first game was error-filled – Whalley made two fielding miscues to Abby's three – and centre-fielder Jordan McComb led the Chiefs with two singles, a double, a run-batted-in and a stolen base.
Second-baseman Brad Fitzsimmons also went 3-for-3 at the plate.
Whalley pitcher Gage McLaren was credited with the win after pitching the final four innings in relief. He struck out two while allowing just one run.
In the second game, the Chiefs were victimized by one poor inning, as Abbotsford plated four runs in the fifth.
Chiefs' reliever Daniel Teichman was tagged with the loss, giving up four of those five runs – but just two of them earned.
Left-fielder Will Motley paced the offence with a double and two RBI.
