Volleyball teams wins Canadian Open

Two Surrey residents were part of the Fraser Valley Blues volleyball team which won the Canadian Open national championship in Saskatoon May 5-8.

Reece Frey and Josiah Mooy were part of the under-14 team which won all nine matches.

Frey’s best effort of the tournament was on the first day, as he had 11 kills, six aces and 10 blocks while the Blues swept three matches while playing the middle hitter position. Mooy was a defensive standout on the final day of competition, which concluded with a 25-13, 25-22 win over the Victoria Flyers in the championship match. In three playoff matches on the final day, Mooy totaled 14 kills and 15 blocks.

The Blues also won the B.C. championship in their age group, and finished the season with a 39-12 won-lost record, all but one loss against competition in older age groups.
