For the SFU Clan football team, it seems membership doesn't have its privileges.

The Clan, who were granted full NCAA membership in the summer after two seasons of play as provisional members, dropped their home opener 56-28 to the Central Washington University Wildcats Saturday at Terry Fox Field.

After staying close to the Wildcats through the first half to trail 21-14 at the break, the Clan surrendered 35 points in the second half while scoring only 14 more of their own.

"They were the better team today," said SFU quarterback Trey Wheeler in a release. "We need to be better in practice this week. We need to have a higher level of intensity."

There were glimmers of hope. Wheeler completed 28 of his 36 pass attempts for 285 years, while receiver Lemar Durant pulled down 10 catches for 114 yards and one touchdown.

The Wildcats opened the scoring midway through the first quarter on an 18 yard pass play from quarterback Ryan Robertson to Tavoy Moore. The Clan answered late in the period when Wheeler found Durant with a 20-yard bullet to the right side of the end zone.

Central Washington extended their advantage with two straight touchdowns in the second quarter before the Clan answered back on a three-yard strike from Wheeler to Jamal Kett with just over a minute left in the half, capping an 18-play, 92-yard drive.

The loss drops the Clan to 1-1, 0-1 in conference play. They travel to Arcata, CA to play Humboldt State on Saturday.
