Surrey golfer, 15, ties for low overall honours at MJT event in Abbotsford

Peninsula junior golfers bring it to Ledgeview

More than 90 young golfers competed in the MJT (Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour) PLYR series at Ledgeview Golf and Country Club over the weekend (May 20 and 21).

Titles in six divisions were on the line and there was also the chance to qualify for two major events: the PGA Tour Canada-affiliated MJT Future Stars Invitational in Edmonton, AB, this June, and for Team BC in the Junior America’s Cup in Reno, Nevada, this July. Scoring averages will be used to finalize Team BC once qualifying at select events is completed.

The tricky Ledgeview course, childhood home club to MJT alumni and PGA Tour stars Adam Hadwin and Nick Taylor, showed its teeth this weekend as the packed field battled to break par on the difficult track.

Surrey’s Harvey Liu, 15, who golfed 74 and 75 for a total of 149, tied with Nanaimo’s Samuel Kurytnik, 17, for Low Overall honours in the juvenile boys division.

Both receive MJT Future Stars presented by ATB exemptions.

It will be Liu’s second appearance at the MJT Future Stars Invitational, after his one-shot weekend victory.

“It feels good to have my hard work pay off and boosts my confidence for the rest of the season,” said Liu, crediting his driver and his attitude for the win.

Surrey’s Jackson Wang, 11, golfed 77 and 73 for a total of 150 to win the MJT peewee boys division title, followed by White Rock’s David Zhang, 11, who golfed 77 and 77 for a total of 154, putting him in second place in the divsion.

Already a MJT veteran at age 11, Wang played steady on the back nine of the second day for the four-stroke win.

“I feel great, and this is also my first-ever junior tour win!” said Wang.

“My putting and chipping won me the tournament.”

The next Junior Tour stop in the province is the waitlisted MJT Maui Jim Series at Meadow Gardens Golf Club in Pitt Meadows, June 3-4.
