The Surrey Storm '93 girls squad created a cyclone around the Victoria Devils '94 with their speedy base running this past weekend at Softball City, garnering them first place in the B.C. Midget Girls Fastpitch Championships and a spot at the nationals next month.
The Storm blanked the visiting Victoria team, 4-0, only allowing three runs during the entire tournament. Surrey also logged an impressive 70 runs in their eight games played.
Storm coach Kim Wright said the design of team works well.
"We have four kids that are lightning-fast and heavy contact hitters that drive them home," Wright said.
The Surrey team will begin practising again next week ahead of the Canadian Midget Girls Fastpitch Championships in Winnipeg from Aug. 14-21.
Last year Surrey Storm '93 attended the nationals as a first-year team, placed third overall and were the only '93 team to medal, said Wright.
White Rock is also well represented at the national championships. Wright credits the weather in this region of the country as well as strong technical training for the strong Surrey representation.
"The Surrey area is producing very good ball players and putting a lot of kids into the national program," said Wright.
Meanwhile, in the Senior A Women's Provincial Championship at Softball City, the Delta Heat placed second after being thumped 9-0 by the White Rock Renegades.
