Home ice was nice for the Valley West Hawks as they swept a best-of-three Major Midget Hockey League playoff series from the Cariboo Cougars to advance to the semifinal round.

Comprising players from Surrey, Cloverdale, Semiahmoo and Langley minor hockey associations, the Hawks scratched out a 4-3 win in Game 1 over the visiting Cougars before completing the sweep with a 5-2 in Game 2.

In the series opener, the Hawks trailed 3-2 with less than three minutes remaining in the third period before rallying with goals from Ty Westgard and Matt Bradley.

Game 2 did not have as much drama as the Valley boys built up a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes and cruised to the win. Surrey’s Mitch Newsome scored twice for the Hawks while solo markers came from the sticks of Westgard, Spencer Gerth and Jamieson Ree.

The Hawks will now face the Okanagan Rockets in a best-of-three semifinal series beginning Friday in Kelowna. Home ice was nice for the Valley West Hawks as they swept a best-of-three Major Midget Hockey League playoff series from the Cariboo Cougars to advance to the semifinal round.
